Trial Begins for Defendant in Fatal Mobile Drive‑By Shooting

The trial has officially begun for Darius Janoski Lucky Jr., one of the defendants accused in the tragic 2023 drive-by shooting that claimed the life of 9-year-old Cailee Knight in Mobile, Alabama. The case has gripped the community, highlighting the heartbreak caused when violence strikes innocent children.

Prosecutors allege that Lucky, along with at least one other person, fired shots into the Knight family home on December 5, 2023. Investigators say the attack was retaliation linked to Cailee’s older brother, who allegedly took a firearm from a co-defendant just days before the shooting. The chilling sequence of events underscores the dangers of firearms being mishandled and the devastating ripple effects of revenge.

Family members of both the victim and defendant gathered outside the courthouse, their grief, tension, and hope for justice palpable. Emotions ran high as jury selection concluded and attendees prepared to hear the proceedings. For Cailee’s loved ones, the courtroom represents the possibility of accountability for a life taken far too soon.

Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood confirmed that agreements have already been reached with two of Lucky’s co-defendants, who could potentially testify against him. “All of that information has been turned over to the defense,” Blackwood said, leaving open the possibility that these testimonies could play a pivotal role in the trial.
