Shots rang out in a south Birmingham neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, leaving a man dead on the front porch of a home, shaking the tight-knit Titusville community.
The city’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alerted police to at least two shots fired in the 300 block of Iota Avenue around 4:40 p.m. Officers arrived quickly to find the victim unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene. At this time, authorities have not released his identity, and it is unclear if he lived at the home where he was found.
Detective Officer De’Rell Freeman said, “There are very little details right now in this investigation and our detectives are working very hard to understand what transpired. Right now, we won’t say there’s a threat to the public. We’re doing everything we can to solve this homicide like we do all others.”
Family members and friends arrived soon after the shooting, their grief evident as they gathered outside the home. For them, and the larger Titusville community, this tragedy hits hard—making this the 11th homicide in Birmingham this year, and the first since March 21.
Freeman acknowledged the heavy toll on the city: “It’s very devastating. We have families, community members that have lost a loved one.” Residents are left grappling with the reality that violence can strike anywhere, even in familiar neighborhoods.
