The community of Hilliard, Florida, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of James “Kevin” Crews, a dedicated volunteer firefighter who died in the line of duty while responding to a brush fire. The 59-year-old member of the Hilliard Volunteer Fire Department suffered a medical emergency on Thursday during active firefighting operations along Old Dixie Highway.
According to town officials, Crews was part of a response team working to contain one of several wildfires that have recently impacted Nassau County. This particular fire marked the fifth brush fire reported in the area within a single week, highlighting the growing challenges faced by first responders across the region.
Fellow firefighters immediately rendered aid at the scene, initiating life-saving measures before Crews was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, he later passed away, leaving behind a grieving department and community that deeply respected his service.
Fire Chief Jerry Johnson described Crews as a man of exceptional courage and commitment, noting that his sacrifice will never be forgotten. Colleagues remembered him as dependable, selfless, and always willing to answer the call, no matter the circumstances.
Crews began his firefighting journey in Ware County, Georgia, before continuing his service in Hilliard, where he spent the last two years assigned to Station 4. His impact extended beyond emergency response, as he was known throughout the community for his kindness and dedication to helping others.
The Town of Hilliard, along with local and state agencies, is continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, residents are coming together to honor Crews’ life and legacy.
