The Buffalo Grove, Illinois community is mourning the tragic loss of Orlando Rivas, a 52-year-old security guard at Buffalo Grove High School, who died following a devastating accident during Tuesday afternoon dismissal near Dundee Road.

According to reports, a vehicle in the school parking lot struck a utility pole, causing it to collapse unexpectedly. The pole fell directly onto Rivas, who was positioned nearby assisting students as they crossed safely during dismissal. He was performing his routine duties when the tragic incident occurred.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Rivas to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition. Medical teams worked to stabilize him, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

Rivas is remembered as a dedicated and steady presence at the school, someone who took pride in ensuring student safety. Colleagues and community members describe him as kind, responsible, and deeply committed to protecting others.

He is survived by his wife, Erin, and four children ranging in age from 4 to 30. His passing has left a profound void in both his family and the school community.

In the days following the incident, a GoFundMe campaign organized by friends and school supporters raised more than $130,000, reflecting the deep respect and admiration people held for him.

A vigil is being planned at the school’s turf field, where students, staff, and community members will gather to honor his life and service.
