Manchester Mourns Joe Thompson While His Widow Announces Pregnancy After His Death

It is with a mix of profound sorrow and hope that Manchester reflects on the life and legacy of Joe Thompson, the former footballer and Manchester United academy star who passed away last April at the age of 36 after a battle with stage four lymphoma. A year after his tragic death, Thompson’s widow, Chantelle, has revealed that she is pregnant with his child through IVF treatment using frozen embryos, bringing a new chapter of hope to the family he cherished.

Joe Thompson is remembered not only for his career at clubs including Rochdale, Tranmere, Southport, Bury, and Carlisle United but also for his remarkable courage in facing cancer three times during his life. His unforgettable goal that saved Rochdale from League One relegation in 2018 earned recognition as Laureus’ Sporting Moment of the Year and remains a testament to his determination and spirit.

Chantelle shared with ITV News the profound significance of carrying a child conceived with Joe’s embryo. “It just means absolutely everything. I know it’s never going to replace Joe, obviously. Joe’s Joe. But to be able to bring his baby into the world again is beautiful,” she said. The couple had envisioned a future with another child, and Joe even suggested a name for their future son before his passing.
