Surveillance Video Reveals Tense Hours Before Officers Were Shot

Home surveillance video captured voices, threats, and the flash of a firearm just minutes before the shooting that left officers wounded, according to testimony from an MPD homicide detective in court Tuesday.

Det. Jose Flores, who has been closely involved in the investigation into the shooting near 25th and Garfield, told the court he went to a nearby home after receiving a tip that the residence had surveillance footage from the time of the incident. The video — recorded by a woman who called 911 three times that night — was shown in court as part of the ongoing proceedings.

According to Flores, the footage shows several people standing in the roadway well before the reported arrival of Corder and McCray. Loud voices and audible threats can be heard on the video, contributing to a tense atmosphere in the moments before gunfire broke out. One individual is seen carrying what appeared to be a long gun, and Flores testified that at one point the person raised the weapon and fired shots toward the sky. Immediately afterward, others in the street began to run, suggesting panic or alarm among the group.
