The quiet community of Muscatine, Iowa, is paralyzed by grief and disbelief following a horrific multi-location family shooting rampage on Monday, June 1, 2026. Local authorities have confirmed that 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland went on a shooting rampage, killing six of his family members—including his 51-year-old wife, Lesa McFarland, and their two children—before taking his own life. The catastrophic violence, which investigators believe stemmed from a domestic dispute, has left a total of seven people dead and sent shockwaves through the entire region.
The tragedy began unfolding at approximately 12:12 p.m. when the Muscatine Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at a home in the 210 block of Park Avenue. Upon entering the residence, officers discovered four victims suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The suspected gunman fled the home before police arrived but was soon located on the nearby Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As the investigation widened, officers discovered two additional crime scenes. An adult male relative was found deceased inside a home in the 1500 block of Mill Street, and another adult relative was discovered dead at a business on Grand Avenue. The Muscatine Community School District revealed that the victims included two district employees and two students, prompting immediate counseling services at Muscatine High School, Susan Clark Junior High, Madison Elementary, McKinley Elementary, and Franklin Elementary. Relatives and neighbors are devastated by the sudden loss of Lesa and her family, remembering them as deeply cherished members of the community whose lives were cut short by an act of unthinkable violence.
