The tight-knit community of Bartow, Florida, is enveloped in profound sorrow following the tragic and sudden passing of 18-year-old Layne Michael Smith, who lost his life in a devastating off-road vehicle accident. The heartbreaking incident occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, May 31, 2026, near Lake Wales. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, emergency dispatchers received a frantic distress call around 2:34 a.m. regarding a serious crash deep within the remote property of the River Ranch Hunt Club on County Road 630. Because the collision site was located miles away from the main roadway, specialized members of the Sheriff’s Office Agriculture Unit had to quickly assist by transporting paramedics directly to the rugged terrain.
Investigators determined that Layne had been enjoying the weekend riding terrain vehicles with a close group of friends when he accidentally became separated from the pack. Sensing something was wrong, his friends retraced their route through the off-road trails and made the agonizing discovery of Layne trapped beneath an overturned ATV. Though he was semi-conscious when first located, he quickly faded. Despite the desperate, immediate implementation of CPR and life-saving measures by both his friends and arriving fire rescue personnel, Layne tragically succumbed to his severe internal injuries at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle flipped over after the wheels became caught in soft dirt during a sharp turn. The loss of a young man with his entire life ahead of him has completely shattered his family and friends. Beyond the tragic headlines, Layne is being remembered for his adventurous spirit, loyal friendships, and the lasting impact he made on everyone who knew him.
