MIDLAND, TX — The closely knit West Texas communities of Odessa and Midland are joined in a state of profound shock and heavyhearted mourning following the tragic passing of William Smedley, whose death occurred late Saturday night, May 30, 2026. A deeply respected 47-year-old resident of Odessa, Smedley’s life was abruptly cut short following a devastating head-on motor vehicle collision involving an allegedly heavily intoxicated driver. The unexpected roadway casualty has left an immeasurable emotional void in the hearts of his immediate family, lifelong friends, and fellow motorcyclists.
According to formal collision reports released by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the high-impact incident transpired at approximately 11:24 p.m. at the dark intersection of South Fairgrounds Road and Cloverdale Road in Midland County. Smedley was operating his 2021 Ducati motorcycle southbound on Fairgrounds Road when a northbound 2013 Hyundai Sonata illegally crossed over the center dividing line into the southbound lanes in a reckless attempt to pass another vehicle. Compounding the severe hazard, the oncoming sedan was being operated completely without headlights despite the late-night conditions.
The two vehicles collided head-on, inflicting catastrophic, life-threatening injuries upon Smedley.
