Memorial Day Outing Riptide Tragedy Involving Football Teammates

SURFSIDE BEACH, South Carolina — A festive holiday weekend celebration transformed into an absolute nightmare for a South Carolina family after 10-year-old local youth football player Joshua Lahai was pulled out to sea and tragically drowned during a Memorial Day beach outing.

The tragic incident unfolded on Monday, May 25, 2026, along the shores of Surfside Beach in Horry County. According to preliminary emergency dispatch reports and statements from local beach patrol units, Lahai was visiting the oceanfront park alongside several of his youth football teammates, coaches, and parents to celebrate the holiday. While wading in the Atlantic surf, a sudden, high-velocity rip current caught the young boy and rapidly pulled him away from the shoreline into deeper waters.

Witnesses on the scene immediately alerted lifeguards and placed desperate E-911 calls, prompting a massive, multi-agency tactical deployment. The Surfside Beach Police Department, Horry County Fire Rescue, and United States Coast Guard helicopter crews rapidly established a search perimeter, aggressively combing the rough surf and breaking waves. After a grueling and tense search operation, rescue swimmers located the non-responsive child and brought him back to the beach. Emergency medical technicians initiated immediate, aggressive life-saving protocols and chest compressions on the sand before rushing Lahai to a nearby regional medical center. Despite extensive and heroic resuscitation efforts by emergency room trauma staff, he was officially pronounced deceased a short time later.

News of the child’s untimely passing has triggered an immense outpouring of grief and community support for the Lahai family, with teammates remembering Joshua as a joyful, affectionate young man who loved making others laugh. Local water safety advocates are utilizing the tragic loss to raise critical regional awareness regarding ocean undercurrents. The investigation remains closed as a tragic accidental drowning.
