HAMMOND, Indiana — A minor traffic violation escalated into a deadly highway confrontation early Tuesday morning, leaving a suspect dead and an Indiana State Police trooper wounded. The violent encounter occurred just after midnight on Interstate 80/94, east of the Indiana-Illinois state line, marking the second time in a single week that a regional law enforcement officer has been involved in a shooting.
The incident began when an alert Indiana State Police trooper pulled over a grey Hyundai Elantra near Indianapolis Boulevard. Sensing danger during the initial interaction, the trooper immediately requested backup, drawing swift responses from two Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and a Hammond police officer. As the four law enforcement officials approached the vehicle, the driver—identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office as 34-year-old Aaron Barnes of Gary, Indiana—suddenly produced a handgun and opened fire.
A fierce exchange of gunfire erupted between Barnes and the four officers. Barnes was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. During the chaotic shootout, the initiating state trooper was shot directly in the chest. The wounded officer was rushed to a hospital in Munster before being transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where physicians listed him in stable condition.
Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield noted that the trooper’s instinct to call for immediate backup likely saved lives during what rapidly became a deadly ambush. The interstate corridor faced extended lane closures through the morning as forensic investigators meticulously documented the scene and collected ballistic evidence. As the multi-agency investigation continues into the specific factors that triggered the assault, regional authorities are keeping the injured trooper in their thoughts, hoping for a swift and complete recovery.
