The community of Kankakee, Illinois, is currently united in a state of profound and “unimaginable grief” following the tragic passing of Payson Groff on April 30, 2026. At just 15 years old, Payson was a sophomore at Herscher High School whose vibrant spirit and remarkable sense of purpose left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Her departure has created a deep void in Kankakee County, where she was known as a young woman of high intelligence, bold ambition, and a heart full of kindness.

Born in Kankakee, Payson was a student who looked toward the future with clear eyes and great determination. She held a steadfast dream of attending Northwestern University to study law, an aspiration that reflected her desire to advocate for others and make a positive impact on the world. To her classmates and teachers, she was a person of steady character—someone who balanced her academic goals with a love for sports, competing in both softball and track. Her creative energy was perhaps best captured in her lighthearted TikTok series, “Cooking with Good Looking,” which she produced alongside her best friend, Natalie.

Beyond her accomplishments, Payson was a “shining light” within her family and her church. As a devoted older sister and a member of Faith Baptist Church, her life was grounded in her faith and her unwavering loyalty to those she loved. She found peace and happiness in simple joys, from drawing and video games to summer trips to Panama City Beach. Her presence was defined by humor, sincerity, and a natural ability to foster genuine connections with people of all ages.

As the community gathers at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home to honor her memory, Payson’s legacy remains defined by the light she shared and the dreams she so bravely pursued. She is being remembered with heartfelt respect and deep love by a community that stands in solidarity with her grieving family. Payson will be deeply missed and forever honored as a “shining star” of Kankakee. May she rest in eternal peace.
