The community of Chicopee, Massachusetts, is joined in a state of “profound and respectful mourning” following the passing of Rodger E. Nichols on April 28, 2026, at the age of 89. A man of immense character and resilience, Rodger’s life was defined by a remarkable 20-year career in the United States military and a deep devotion to his family. His departure marks the end of an era for the Nichols family, as he is now reunited with his beloved wife of 68 years, Gwendoline Nichols, who predeceased him.
Born in New Washington, Indiana, Rodger’s journey of service began at the young age of 16 when he enlisted in the Army in 1953. After an honorable discharge due to his age, he returned to service months later by joining the Air Force, where he served with distinction as a jet engine mechanic until his retirement in 1974. A proud Vietnam Veteran, Rodger was the recipient of numerous medals, awards, and ribbons, reflecting a life of courage and patriotism. Following his military career, he spent many years as a manager at the Westover NCO Club and later retired from Hamilton Standard in 1999.
In Chicopee, Rodger was a “familiar and steady presence” within veteran circles, serving as a member and past-vice commander of DAV Chapter 11. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, and “backyard mechanic” who found joy in metal detecting and helping fellow veterans. To his five children, many grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren, Rodger was a pillar of strength and a source of “lasting memories” rooted in hard work and kindness.
A funeral service will be held on May 5 at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home in Holyoke, followed by committal with military honors at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. As the community gathers to honor his life, they celebrate a man who served his country and his family with unwavering loyalty. Rodger will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a true American hero. May he rest in eternal peace.
