UNION COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina community and the South Carolina Army National Guard are mourning the heartbreaking loss of two 19-year-old service members, Carol Santiago and Kristal Lopez, who tragically died following a devastating head-on collision earlier this month.
According to officials, the crash occurred when the sedan carrying Santiago and Lopez collided with a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported the injured to nearby hospitals, but the injuries proved fatal. Santiago was pronounced dead at the scene on March 16, while Lopez later passed away on March 23 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
The loss of the two young soldiers has left their unit, the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, in deep mourning. Leaders within the South Carolina Army National Guard described them as dedicated, proud, and full of promise, noting their commitment to service and their positive impact on those around them.
Tributes from fellow service members highlight Kristal Lopez’s bright spirit, willingness to help others, and pride in wearing the uniform. Carol Santiago is remembered for her dedication, professionalism, and the strong work ethic she brought to her role as a human resources specialist.
The collision remains under investigation by authorities, and officials have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the crash.
