In loving memory – Jacksonville shaken after off-campus shooting prompts lockdown at Raines High School

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville community was left shaken after a violent incident near Raines High School led to a temporary lockdown and raised concerns among residents and families. Authorities say a man was shot multiple times Monday afternoon following a large fight that escalated into gunfire in a nearby neighborhood.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO), officers responded to the 6000 block of Raines Viking Drive shortly after 2:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a large group. While dispatchers were still on the phone with the caller, gunshots were heard, prompting the situation to be upgraded to a shooting call.

When officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Officials later confirmed that he is now stable and expected to survive. Authorities also clarified that the victim is not a student at the school.

As a precaution, Raines High School was placed on lockdown while law enforcement secured the area. School officials confirmed that all students and staff remained safe throughout the incident, and the lockdown was lifted later in the afternoon once the situation was under control.

Investigators detained more than a dozen individuals at the scene as they work to determine who was responsible for the shooting. Police have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public, but the investigation remains active.
