The community of Hickory, North Carolina is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a young boy whose final act showed incredible courage and selflessness. Seven-year-old Abel Friday-Williams tragically drowned while trying to save a friend near a waterfall in a pond close to Bruce Meisner Park.
According to reports, emergency responders were called to the scene just before 7 p.m., where they discovered Abel submerged in the water. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Authorities believe Abel entered the water in an attempt to help another child, an act his family describes as heroic.
His aunt shared the emotional reality of the moment, explaining that Abel went into the water to save his friend and ultimately lost his own life. The heartbreaking story has deeply impacted not only his family but the entire Hickory community.
