It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the tragic passing of 19-year-old Orla Wates from London, who died in a motorbike accident while exploring the Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam. Orla was rushed to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi after the accident but sadly passed away on Thursday, April 2.
Orla was about to begin her undergraduate studies at Durham University and was described by her mother, Henrietta Wates, as beautiful, independent, full of laughter, and possessing a sharp wit. She loved to live life to the fullest and embraced every moment with energy, joy, and curiosity. Her sudden passing has left her family, friends, and the wider community devastated.
In the midst of unimaginable grief, Orla’s parents, Andrew and Henrietta, made the courageous decision to donate her organs, giving life to patients in need across Vietnam. This act of generosity and compassion has provided a meaningful way to honor her memory and bring comfort to the family, knowing that Orla’s legacy continues to impact the lives of others. Vietnam’s health minister Dao Hong Lan personally acknowledged the family’s courage and expressed gratitude for their selfless act, which transcends nationality and race.
