The sports world and Roscommon community are mourning the loss of Aidan McHugh, a legendary footballer whose skill and charisma left an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew him. Aidan passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy that will be remembered by teammates, friends, and fans alike.
Aidan first came to prominence in 1978, stepping into the Roscommon U-21 team against Sligo when Tony McManus was unavailable due to college exams. Seizing the moment, Aidan scored four goals in a commanding 5-7 to 1-6 victory, earning his place permanently. He later lined up in the full-forward line alongside Tony McManus and Harry Crowley during the All-Ireland final win against Kerry—a triumph that cemented his place in Roscommon’s football history.
Though life took him through years with the Garda Síochána, Aidan never lost touch with the sport and the camaraderie it brought. In recent years, through the Roscommon GAA Golf Society, friendships were rekindled, and he was always the life of the gathering, full of humor, warmth, and stories from his playing days. He took immense pride in the achievements of Strokestown and delighted in the excitement of local matches, often remarking on the energy and spirit of Roscommon fans.
Aidan’s charm extended beyond the field—his smile, his wit, and his love for the craic made every meeting a joy. One memorable moment in Michael Finneran’s pub in London perfectly captured his zest for life: “Where in the world would you see craic like this? It’s fantastic,” he said, surrounded by cheering Roscommon supporters.
