Life can change in an instant, and for the families and students of STEAM Academy McCluer South-Berkeley High School, that reality became heartbreakingly clear. Juan Wan Wan, known affectionately as “Wan Wan,” was a vibrant 13-year-old whose bright spirit and warm presence left a mark on everyone he met. On what should have been a day of celebration at a track meet, laughter and cheers were replaced by terror and grief, as tragedy struck unexpectedly.
Juan was more than a student—he was a son, a friend, a classmate, and a young soul full of promise. His light touched those around him, making friends feel seen and families proud of the kind and joyful young man he was becoming. At just 13, Juan had an entire future ahead: milestones to reach, dreams to chase, and countless memories yet to be made. That future, tragically, will never be realized.
The ripple effect of this loss is felt far beyond Juan’s immediate family. Another student remains hospitalized, fighting for their life, while peers, teachers, and families try to process the trauma of witnessing such a devastating event. A place of learning and growth has been transformed into a community in mourning, grappling with questions no one should have to face.
