Tragic Morning on U.S. 301: Ja’Quez Johnson Collides With Delivery Truck

A routine Thursday morning commute turned deadly on June 19 near Elm City, North Carolina, when 28-year-old Ja’Quez Johnson slammed into the back of a Frito-Lay delivery truck on U.S. 301. Johnson’s 2011 Honda collided with a 2024 Isuzu truck driven by 42-year-old Clinton Whitaker of Nashville, who had slowed down while making a U-turn in a median opening, partially sitting in the left lane.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m., between East Langley Road and Beauvue Road. Investigators report that Johnson, driving at approximately 55 mph, never braked before the impact. His vehicle swung left off the road and came to rest back in the travel lane, while Whitaker’s truck remained stationary. First responders arrived quickly, but Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no alcohol or drugs were involved. What led to Johnson not slowing down or attempting to avoid the collision remains unknown, leaving a haunting question about those final seconds. The southbound lanes of U.S. 301 were closed for nearly two hours while emergency crews cleared the wreckage and began their investigation.

Friends and family are left grappling with shock and grief. Many spoke with Johnson just days before the crash, never imagining it would be the last time. He is remembered for his presence, his energy, and the everyday moments shared with those who loved him.

Highway patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, examining vehicle positions, traffic conditions, and witness accounts in hopes of understanding how a normal morning ended in tragedy.
