He Jumped Out and Ran—A Helicopter Had to Hunt Him Down

What began as a routine traffic stop late Saturday night quickly escalated into a dramatic, neighborhood-wide manhunt that had sheriff’s deputies and a helicopter sweeping the skies over Spring Valley Lake.

According to authorities, Jordan Amaya, a 22-year-old man from Victorville, refused to stop when deputies attempted a traffic stop near Bear Valley Road in Apple Valley around 9:20 p.m. Instead of pulling over, Amaya allegedly accelerated, blowing through intersections and committing multiple traffic violations as he sped toward the quiet lakeside community.

Deputies say the pursuit continued through residential streets, raising concerns for public safety as the suspect allegedly drove recklessly in an effort to escape. The chase came to an abrupt end on Bermuda Dunes Road, where Amaya reportedly abandoned his vehicle and ran on foot into the neighborhood.

With the suspect disappearing between homes, deputies called in air support. A sheriff’s helicopter circled overhead, its powerful spotlight sweeping across backyards, fences, and alleyways as ground units spread out to secure the area. Residents watched from their windows and doorways as the normally calm streets filled with flashing lights and the unmistakable hum of the helicopter above.

After an extensive search, deputies successfully located and arrested Amaya without shots fired or injuries, bringing the tense situation to a close.

Amaya is now in custody facing several serious charges, including felony evading with disregard for public safety, driving the wrong way to avoid arrest, and a parole violation. Authorities confirmed the parole hold carries no bail, while the felony evading charge alone has been set at $50,000 bail. Court proceedings are scheduled for early February in Victorville.
