The Fruitport community is draped in orange today as neighbors and friends gather to honor the extraordinary life of Cailen Thomas Vela, who gained his angel wings on May 5, 2026. At just seven years old, Cailen had already become a beacon of resilience, teaching those around him that a diagnosis does not define a soul. After a courageous three-year journey with cancer, he passed away in the company of his parents, Cody and Aly, leaving behind a legacy of laughter that rang much louder than any medical challenge he faced.
Cailen was a whirlwind of energy who refused to let illness dampen his sense of adventure. Whether he was embarking on a whale-watching expedition in California, searching for bears on a “hunt,” or building intricate worlds in Minecraft and Roblox, his zest for life was infectious. He was a proud member of the Fruitport football team and a student who brought immense joy to the Fruitport Community Schools. His deep bond with his “crazy sister” Alyssa and his special “brotherhood” with his friend Harrison—formed during shared radiation treatments—highlighted a heart that was built for deep, meaningful connection.
A dedicated Detroit Tigers fan, Cailen cherished his unique friendship with pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long, a relationship that underscored his ability to inspire everyone he met. His strength was officially recognized when he earned his black belt through the Kids Kicking Cancer program, a moment of immense pride for a boy who truly embodied the spirit of a warrior. From his favorite seat at Connection Point Church to the summer camps where he ran with abandon, Cailen’s presence was a reminder to live every moment to the absolute fullest.
As the Vela family prepares for services at Covenant Life Church, they ask the community to remember Cailen’s vibrant orange spirit. His final legacy, the “Cailen Loves Everybody” fund, will ensure his kindness continues to support other children in need, proving that his love truly has no end.
