The city of Chicago, Illinois, is engulfed in mourning following the tragic line-of-duty death of Officer John Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 25, 2026, within the walls of Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital on the city’s North Side, a location typically reserved for healing that instead became the site of a violent ambush.

Officer Bartholomew, 38, was assigned to the Albany Park (17th) District. On that fateful Saturday morning, he and his 57-year-old partner had transported a suspect arrested for a local robbery to the hospital for medical observation. Authorities report that despite the suspect being wanded for weapons upon entry and remaining under police guard, the individual managed to obtain a firearm. Around 10:50 a.m., the suspect opened fire, striking both officers in a sudden burst of violence. Officer Bartholomew was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was tragically pronounced dead. His partner remains in critical condition, fighting for his life.

The suspect fled the hospital on foot into the surrounding Lincoln Square neighborhood, sparking a massive manhunt that involved SWAT teams and a temporary lockdown of the area. He was eventually apprehended in a nearby yard. The loss of Officer Bartholomew has sent ripples of grief through the entire Chicago law enforcement community. Superintendent Larry Snelling described him as a dedicated public servant who understood the dangers of the job but chose to serve his city with honor every day.

Officer Bartholomew’s legacy is one of ultimate sacrifice. He leaves behind a grieving department and a city indebted to his decade of service. As investigators look into how the suspect secured a weapon within the hospital, the community stands united in support of the Bartholomew family and the 17th District, honoring a hero who gave his life to keep Chicago safe.
