Authorities in Aurora, Colorado are investigating a violent incident involving a K-9 officer and his service dog during a response to a mental health crisis call on April 9, 2026.
According to police reports, officers and a mental health crisis response team were dispatched after reports of a man threatening harm to himself and others. Upon arrival, the suspect exited a residence and suddenly attacked responding personnel.
The first officer encountered in the attack was K-9 Handler Mark Moore. Officials report that he was seriously injured during the confrontation, suffering multiple stab wounds. Despite his injuries, Officer Moore was able to defend himself and neutralize the threat. The suspect was fatally shot during the incident.
Officer Moore sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported for emergency medical treatment. Authorities say he faces a long recovery process ahead.
K-9 Cyrus, Officer Moore’s service dog partner, was also injured in the attack after being stabbed during the confrontation. The police department confirmed that Cyrus received emergency veterinary care and is expected to recover. Officials also noted that Cyrus is a recent cancer survivor, making his recovery especially significant to the department.
