The Macon, Georgia community is mourning the tragic loss of 28-year-old Ayana Smith, who died following a shooting at a home on Fulton Street in East Macon. Her two-year-old daughter was also injured in the incident and transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her arm. The heartbreaking case has deeply affected family members and residents across Bibb County.

Authorities reported that the shooting occurred on February 10, when emergency responders were called to the residence after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found Ayana Smith and her young child suffering from gunshot wounds. Smith later succumbed to her injuries, while the toddler survived after receiving medical treatment.

Investigators arrested 34-year-old Marquiz Deonte Brooks the following day. According to officials, Brooks had previously been in a romantic relationship with Smith, and the case has since been treated as a targeted act of violence.

On April 21, a Bibb County Grand Jury indicted Brooks on multiple serious charges, including felony murder, malice murder, two counts of aggravated assault, cruelty to children in the first degree, and four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The indictment marks a significant development in a case that has shaken the East Macon community. Loved ones describe Ayana Smith as a caring mother whose life was centered around her child. Her sudden death has left family and friends devastated as they try to process the loss.
