The St. Louis County, Missouri community is continuing to process the aftermath of a tragic family-related homicide case involving a teenager now certified to stand trial as an adult. The case centers around the fatal stabbing of 39-year-old Derrick Merit in August 2025.
According to St. Louis County Police, officers responded to the 200 block of Carrington Lane in Lemay on the afternoon of August 17, 2025, after reports of a violent incident inside a home. When authorities arrived at approximately 4:30 p.m., they found Derrick Merit suffering from life-threatening stab wounds.
Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
Following an investigation, a 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody in connection with the stabbing. Due to the severity of the allegations, the case was reviewed by juvenile authorities and later moved forward for consideration in adult court proceedings.
On Tuesday, a judge officially certified Dakota Merit, now 16, to stand trial as an adult. She is facing charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of her family member.
The decision marks a significant development in a case that has drawn attention due to its violent nature and the age of the accused. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive, and the circumstances leading up to the incident remain part of the ongoing legal process.
