Florida — The Florida and U.S. Para Swimming communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Hannah Nelson, 23, a talented and inspirational swimmer who passed away following a catastrophic brain bleed on Easter Sunday, April 7, 2026. Her death has left family, teammates, and friends grieving the sudden loss of a bright, accomplished young woman.
Hannah Nelson was more than an athlete; she was a leader, a role model, and a source of joy to everyone around her. Beginning her swimming journey at age 8, she overcame a childhood diagnosis of bone cancer at 11, which resulted in the partial amputation of her left leg. Despite these challenges, Hannah excelled both in collegiate swimming at Ave Maria University and on the international stage with Team USA at the Para Swimming World Championships.
Her coach at Ave Maria University described Hannah as the “definition of a true leader,” noting her impact extended far beyond the pool. She held school swimming records, represented her country with distinction, and inspired countless teammates and peers with her resilience and positivity.
