The Cunupia community is grappling with shock and concern following a harrowing incident involving 72-year-old pensioner John Lewis, who allegedly attempted to kill his daughter, police officer Khalia Lewis, on March 28. The incident, which reportedly occurred while Lewis was intoxicated, has left family, neighbors, and colleagues deeply unsettled.
During the hearing on the charge of attempted murder, John Lewis appeared before Master Rhea Libert. Given the seriousness of the charge, he was not called upon to enter a plea. State attorney Avion Hoppie opposed bail, highlighting that both the alleged victim and the accused reside in the same household, raising concerns for Khalia’s safety.
Master Libert raised questions regarding Lewis’ fitness to participate in proceedings due to his age and an advanced prostate cancer diagnosis. Following an application by defense attorneys, Lewis was remanded for psychiatric evaluation at St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital. This assessment will determine his mental fitness and guide the next steps in the judicial process.
