The campus of North Carolina Central University was struck by tragedy as students mourned the sudden passing of sophomore Zyarre Prince, a Maryland native and criminal justice major whose life promised so much. Known for his energy, laughter, and leadership, Prince served as Mister Freshman for the 2024–2025 academic year and was celebrated by classmates for his engaging presence and unwavering spirit.
“Zyarre was always smiling, happy, dancing—he was a voice among his peers,” said fellow student Aiden Roberts. Many students described him as someone who fearlessly spoke up and championed others, embodying the very essence of community leadership. His passing has left classmates and friends grappling with grief and calling for increased mental health support on campus.
Some students mentioned concerns about bullying, though Prince did not appear outwardly to be struggling. “You never know what’s going on in someone’s mind,” noted student Khalil McLean, highlighting the complexity of mental health challenges and the need for proactive resources.
