Just weeks before his 21st birthday, Riley King’s life was tragically cut short in a devastating hit-and-run incident that has left his family and community heartbroken. The loss is made even more painful by the circumstances—his loved ones say they first learned of his death through a text message, a moment that forever changed their lives.
The incident occurred just before midnight along US Highway 41 near County Highway A in Little River. Deputies from the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11:50 p.m., where they found Riley lying in the northbound lanes. Sadly, he had already passed away by the time help arrived. The driver responsible did not stop, leaving behind a scene filled with unanswered questions and deep sorrow.
Riley, who was autistic, had reportedly traveled beyond his intended destination of Green Bay and was unfamiliar with the area. His grandmother shared that he had a trusting nature, something that made him especially vulnerable in unfamiliar situations. Witnesses said a driver and her sister had spotted Riley walking dangerously close to traffic just moments before the collision. They pulled over, called 911, and attempted to return to help—but it was already too late.
Investigators are now working tirelessly to identify the vehicle involved. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and asking residents to check their vehicles for any signs of damage, such as dents or broken lights, that could be linked to the incident.
