Infant’s tragic death leads to sentencing and unanswered questions

A heartbreaking case out of Atlantic, Iowa, has left a community shaken after the tragic death of four-week-old Kahlani—a life that had only just begun. What happened in those brief moments inside a quiet room continues to weigh heavily on the hearts of many, especially those closest to her.

On January 4, 2025, Kahlani’s mother had just finished feeding her before stepping out of the room for a short time. When she returned, she found the baby in her father’s arms, unresponsive and limp. Panic quickly set in as emergency care was sought, but the damage had already been done. Just two days later, on January 6, Kahlani was pronounced dead.

Medical professionals at a children’s hospital in Omaha determined that the infant had suffered severe brain and eye injuries. According to medical examiners, these injuries were consistent with cerebrospinal trauma—something that could not have occurred naturally or accidentally. Investigators concluded that the injuries happened while Kahlani was in the care of her father, 26-year-old Corbin Loudermilk.

Initially facing a first-degree murder charge, Loudermilk later pleaded guilty to child endangerment resulting in death. As part of that plea, the more severe charge was dropped. He was sentenced to up to 50 years in prison, with a minimum of 15 years to be served before any possibility of parole.
