A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken both the international student community and residents of Winnipeg following the death of Rodiyat Alabede, a 22-year-old student from Nigeria who passed away after donating plasma at a collection center on October 25, 2025. Rodiyat had moved to Canada in 2022 to pursue her studies at the University of Winnipeg, where she was working toward her dream of becoming a social worker.
Friends describe Rodiyat as a joyful and compassionate young woman who was passionate about helping others. According to her close friend Mary Ann Chika, Rodiyat was full of life and ambition, always speaking about her plans to support people in needโespecially individuals living with disabilities. She believed strongly in giving back to the community and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
On the day of the donation, Rodiyat visited a plasma collection center operated by Grifols, a global healthcare company that manages plasma donation facilities. During her time at the center, her heart suddenly stopped. Emergency services rushed her to a nearby hospital, but tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Authorities say Health Canada has launched a review into the circumstances surrounding Rodiyatโs death. Officials confirmed that they received a report regarding the incident and are examining all available information. At this stage, investigators say they have not established any confirmed link between the plasma donation and her death.
