Teen Tragedy in North Austin: 17-Year-Old Melissa Castrejon Killed in Shooting


Chicago, IL – The North Austin neighborhood is reeling from the tragic loss of Melissa Castrejon, a 17-year-old girl who was fatally shot on Sunday night, January 18, 2026. The shooting occurred at approximately 9:38 PM in the 1800 block of North Latrobe Avenue.

Melissa was inside a vehicle when gunfire erupted, striking her in the back. According to Chicago police, the shots came from a known man. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries. The news of her death has left the community in shock, as concerns about ongoing gun violence in the area continue to grow.

In his message, Daniel said, “Although we are grieving at the moment, bills don’t pause, so if you find it in your hearts to donate, anything helps and is highly appreciated.” As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had already raised nearly $1,500.
