Afleet Alex, Dual Classic Champion and Pediatric Cancer Advocate, Euthanized at 24

The horse racing world is bidding farewell to Afleet Alex, the beloved dual classic winner and champion whose legacy reached far beyond the racetrack. The 24-year-old stallion was humanely euthanized on February 6 due to the infirmities of old age, marking the end of an extraordinary life that blended athletic brilliance with heartfelt purpose.

A standout of his generation, Afleet Alex captured national attention with his remarkable victories in the 2005 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. His breathtaking recovery from a near fall during the Preakness โ€” regaining stride to win convincingly โ€” remains one of the most iconic moments in modern racing history. That performance cemented his reputation for courage, resilience, and heart.

Throughout his racing career, Afleet Alex became closely associated with pediatric cancer research, helping raise awareness and funds for young patients in need. His connection to the cause brought hope and inspiration to families facing unimaginable challenges, transforming him into more than a champion athlete โ€” he became a symbol of strength and compassion.

Following his retirement from racing, Afleet Alex stood at Gainesway Farm, where he enjoyed a successful stud career. The announcement of his passing was made jointly by Gainesway Farm and Cash is King LLC, the racing partnership that campaigned him during his championship years.
