OXNARD, CA — The Oxnard community is mourning the loss of a 45-year-old woman who was killed early Friday morning in a tragic collision involving a parked semi-truck near the intersection of Gonzales Road and Harbor Boulevard, authorities confirmed. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the crash at approximately 4:20 a.m. on December 19, and preliminary investigations reveal the devastating sequence of events.
According to CHP, the woman was driving a Volkswagen Passat sedan westbound on Gonzales Road when her vehicle drifted to the side of the road and collided with a parked big rig near the Harbor Boulevard intersection. The impact caused the Volkswagen to flip over and land in an adjacent agricultural field. Tragically, the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, resulting in her death shortly after emergency responders arrived. There have been no updates regarding the condition of the semi-truck driver. CHP confirmed that it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Oxnard, one of the largest cities in Ventura County, has experienced a rise in traffic collisions in recent years due to its growing population and busy roadways. According to California Office of Traffic Safety reports, 2023 saw 1,312 injuries and fatalities from traffic-related accidents, slightly lower than 2022’s 1,380. Drunk driving remains a significant risk, accounting for nearly 14% of all accidents in 2023, along with distracted driving, unsafe passing, and speeding. Major thoroughfares such as Highway 101 and Pacific Coast Highway are considered particularly dangerous due to high traffic volumes and frequent truck activity.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of driver discipline and roadway safety as key measures to prevent tragedies like this. The loss of the woman on Gonzales Road serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers on Oxnard’s roadways and the critical need for caution, awareness, and responsible driving in the community.
