Honoring a Legacy of Service: Remembering Retired FPD Sgt. Gary Yamamoto


The Fairbanks community and law enforcement family are mourning the loss of retired Fairbanks Police Department Sergeant Gary Yamamoto, a dedicated officer whose 24-year career left an indelible mark on public safety. Gary, who began his service in April 1993 and retired in January 2017, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, mentorship, and professionalism.

Throughout his distinguished career, Gary was a leading member of the Traffic Unit and a top DUI enforcement officer, tirelessly working to make Fairbanks roadways safer. As a Datamaster Supervisor, he trained officers not only from FPD but from other agencies as well, ensuring that DUI investigations were thorough and effective. His expertise extended to supervising the traffic accident investigation team, where his precise collision scene measurements played a critical role in supporting local, state, and federal investigations.

Garyโ€™s impact went far beyond traffic enforcement. He coordinated the Field Training Officer program, mentoring countless officers who remember him as a patient, knowledgeable, and supportive leader. His guidance helped shape the careers of many in law enforcement, fostering professionalism, integrity, and dedication across the department.

Over the years, Garyโ€™s efforts earned him multiple state and local awards for traffic safety and investigative excellence, reflecting the respect and admiration he garnered from colleagues and the community alike. He was a supervisor who led by example, balancing discipline with compassion, and always prioritizing the well-being of his team.
