With broken hearts and profound sorrow, the Chicago community is mourning the loss of Gabryel Gnia Ayres, lovingly known as “Gabby,” who was tragically shot and killed at just 26 years old in a violent attack that has shaken her family, friends, and the wider community.

Gabby’s life was cut short on February 4, 2026, during a daylight shooting in the Gresham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, according to local authorities. The young mother was riding in a vehicle when gunmen opened fire, striking her multiple times. Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, she later died from her injuries.

The harrowing incident unfolded around 1:25 p.m. on the 7900 block of South May Street, where more than fifty rounds were reportedly fired into the victims’ vehicle. A male passenger was also wounded and is currently listed in stable condition. In a miraculous twist amid the tragedy, Gabby’s infant daughter, who was in the back seat, survived without physical injury, though the emotional impact of such trauma cannot be understated.
