OAKLAND, Calif. — Authorities have identified the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a vehicle Sunday evening in north Oakland as Billy Grant, a 72-year-old man. The deadly collision occurred around 6:29 p.m. in the 6000 block of Claremont Avenue near College Avenue, a busy corridor frequently used by both drivers and pedestrians.
According to the Oakland Police Department, Grant was walking in the southbound lane of traffic when he was struck by a car traveling in the same direction. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Grant to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver involved, a 21-year-old woman from Berkeley, remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Authorities have stated that drugs and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
Grant’s death highlights an ongoing and deeply concerning issue in Oakland: pedestrian safety. Official traffic safety data show that pedestrian collisions in the city have remained persistently high in recent years.
