Family Trip Turns Into Heartbreak: Iowa Parents Mourn Three Children Lost in Kenya Crash

What was meant to be a joyful family journey turned into an unimaginable tragedy for a family from Waterloo, Iowa. While traveling together in Kenya in early January 2026, a family of five experienced a devastating loss when a road accident claimed the lives of three siblings along the Nairobiโ€“Nakuru highway near Naivasha.

The victims were Njeri DeLeon, 16, Emmanuel DeLeon, 13, and Kairu Winkelpleck, just 6 years old. Authorities reported that Emmanuel and Kairu died at the scene of the crash. Njeri was rushed to a hospital in Nairobi, where doctors fought tirelessly to save her life. Despite their efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries, deepening the heartbreak for her family.

The childrenโ€™s parents survived the crash and remain in Kenya, facing the unimaginable task of arranging funerals while grieving the loss of three of their five children far from home. What should have been a trip filled with cultural connection, shared memories, and joy instead became a painful farewell in a foreign land.
