Chateaugay, NY — A quiet stretch of State Route 11 became the scene of a heartbreaking tragedy early Wednesday morning after a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a Chateaugay resident. New York State Police confirmed that the fatal accident occurred around 12:15 a.m. on January 28, 2026, prompting an extensive investigation that remains ongoing.
Troopers responded to reports of a serious personal injury crash involving a 2023 black Ford Ranger traveling westbound on Route 11. The vehicle was operated by 24-year-old Ryan E. Bordeau of Malone, with 49-year-old Jennifer S. Hathorn of Chateaugay riding as a passenger. Investigators say the truck left the roadway, exiting onto the north shoulder after the driver lost control, resulting in a violent impact.
Emergency crews from the Chateaugay Fire Department and Foothills EMS arrived quickly and attempted life-saving measures on Hathorn. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her death has sent waves of grief through the community, where she was known and loved.
During the investigation, troopers interviewed Bordeau and reported observing signs of impairment. He was administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which he failed. Authorities later confirmed a breath test showed a blood alcohol concentration of .10%, above the legal limit. A blood sample was also collected at Alice Hyde Medical Center for further analysis.
Bordeau has since been charged with Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree and Driving While Intoxicated. He was arraigned in Town of Malone Court and released on his own recognizance.
