San Jose, CA – The San Jose community is mourning another pedestrian fatality after a collision near the intersection of Story and King Roads on the morning of January 27, 2026. According to the San Jose Police Department (SJPD), the incident occurred around 11:18 a.m., and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SJPD Traffic Investigations Unit responded promptly, temporarily closing nearby roadways to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Officials have not released details about the driver or any contributing factors at this time. This incident marks yet another tragic loss in San Jose, coming just three days after a separate pedestrian fatality in a hit-and-run near South Bascom Avenue and Borello Avenue in West San Jose.
Pedestrian collisions remain a significant public safety concern in San Jose. Data from the city shows that pedestrian deaths consistently represent a substantial portion of traffic fatalities, with 32 reported pedestrian deaths in 2022 and similarly high numbers continuing into 2023. Despite pedestrians comprising a smaller share of total travel, they account for nearly half of traffic fatalities in some multi-year analyses, highlighting the inherent dangers of urban streets.
Factors such as high-traffic corridors, intersections lacking adequate crosswalk infrastructure, and nighttime travel contribute to elevated risk. In response, San Jose has implemented the Vision Zero Action Plan, focusing on priority corridors and strategies including engineering improvements, increased enforcement, and public education to reduce severe injuries and fatalities.
