A quiet Joliet neighborhood was shattered by violence early January 25, 2026, when police responding to frantic 911 calls discovered a devastating scene in the 700 block of Garnsey Avenue. Officers arrived to find a 36-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son unresponsive in the backyard of a residence, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later identified the woman as Joselynn Diaz Garcia. Her young sonโs name has not yet been released. The loss of a mother and child in such sudden, violent circumstances has sent shockwaves through the Joliet community, leaving neighbors struggling to understand how such a tragedy unfolded.
According to Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans, multiple callers reported hearing gunfire and seeing a shirtless man running near nearby train tracks, allegedly discarding a firearm as he fled. As officers canvassed the area, they located a 29-year-old man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his ankle. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and remains in custody, though no charges have been filed at this time.
Police confirmed that a firearm was recovered nearby, along with spent shell casings that appear to match the weapon. Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events and the relationships between those involved, as the case remains under active investigation.
Inside the home, officers also found a 9-year-old boy with special needs, who was unharmed. Authorities say ensuring his safety and providing support services has been a priority in the aftermath of the incident.
