A joyous birthday celebration for children turned into a horrifying crime scene Saturday evening at the Saint John the Baptist Club in Carver, Massachusetts. What was meant to be a night of laughter and fun quickly became a nightmare when a gunman opened fire, killing two men and injuring two others. The chaos unfolded around 7:22 p.m. when a shooter, later identified as 23-year-old Nicholas Meuse, entered the venue and began shooting into a crowd of families and children.
On arrival, police discovered 27-year-old Benjamin Cowart dead at the scene, while 20-year-old Jalen Pina was rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth. Despite efforts to save him, Pina succumbed to his injuries. The other two victims, a 28-year-old man and a 32-year-old man, were both injured but are expected to surviveโone is recovering at Tufts Medical Center, and the other at South Shore Hospital.
In the aftermath, police quickly arrested Meuse and charged him with two counts of murder, two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, and multiple firearms-related offenses. While the motive remains unclear, investigators believe Meuse had specific targets in mind, though the reasoning for such a violent outburst in a public, family-centered space has yet to be fully explained.
