The close-knit neighborhood networks, regional youth scholar circles, and dedicated community groups of Columbia, Richland County, and the broader South Carolina region are draped in a heavy blanket of profound sorrow and intense heartbreak following the tragic passing of Cyrus Carmack-Belton. The exceptional 14-year-old local resident, beloved companion, and cherished family member lost his life unexpectedly following a devastating weapon assault. The catastrophic roadside shooting has left his loving family members, close middle school peers, and an extensive network of lifelong friends completely shattered as they collectively navigate an immeasurable physical and emotional void. Cyrus was a remarkably bright, energetic, and genuine young man whose extraordinary daily warmth, vibrant approach to life, and constant kindness left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
According to official emergency response updates from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and local public safety dispatchers, multi-agency rescue squads rushed to the commercial corridor off Parklane Road following urgent 911 reports of active gunfire near an apartment complex. Preliminary forensic findings indicate that a verbal confrontation inside a Shell Xpress Mart convenience store over false shoplifting suspicions rapidly spilled outside into a 130-yard foot chase, resulting in the store owner executing an unjustified discharge of a firearm that struck the fleeing teenager directly in the back.
Richland County EMS personnel worked tirelessly on-site executing aggressive life-saving measures, but despite immediate clinical interventions, Cyrus tragically succumbed to his severe ballistic injuries. The incident has drawn significant national focus, culminating in a highly charged trial at the Richland County Courthouse. In respect of the family’s wishes, formal memorial services celebrating Cyrus’s bright legacy of promise were held at Bethlehem Baptist Church.
May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
