Riley Pfeiler Obituary, Holy Cross, IA Mental Illness Death: Severe Depression Battle Involving Support from NAMI Dubuque

The close-knit rural community of Holy Cross, Iowa, is draped in a heavy blanket of profound sorrow and intense heartbreak following the tragic passing of Riley M. Pfeiler, a remarkably bright 29-year-old young man who lost his life to suicide on Sunday, May 31, 2026. His sudden and premature departure has left his devoted parents, Mike and Lori Pfeiler, his sister, Regann Simon, and an extensive network of extended family members completely shattered as they collectively process an immeasurable void. Riley was an exceptionally kind, respectful, and vibrant soul whose larger-than-life personality made him the absolute life of the party wherever he went.

Growing up in Dubuque County, Riley was a standout individual who excelled both as a dedicated scholar and a highly gifted athlete. A proud graduate of Western Dubuque High School’s Class of 2014, he dominated the athletic fields, earning widespread admiration from coaches and teammates alike across baseball, track and field, football, and basketball. He went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa, earning his finance and real estate degree in 2018. Riley approached life with infectious energy, loudly cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and Iowa Hawkeyes, golfing with close friends, and finding absolute joy in the company of his treasured dog, Nala.

Tragically, beneath his room-brightening humor and constant willingness to check in on others, Riley was silently struggling with severe mental health challenges. As his grieving relatives prepare for a funeral mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church, they are extending deep gratitude to NAMI Dubuque and Homb Therapy for their compassionate counseling support. A memorial fund has been established to raise critical awareness for unseen depression battles, urging anyone facing a personal crisis to immediately utilize the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
