NEW DELHI — A devastating fire at a guesthouse in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area claimed the lives of at least 21 people on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, prompting a major emergency response and an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The blaze broke out at Flourish Stay B&B, located in the Hauz Rani area of Malviya Nagar. Firefighters, police personnel, and emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of heavy smoke and flames engulfing the multi-storey building. Rescue operations were complicated by the narrow lanes surrounding the property and the rapid spread of smoke throughout the structure.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as occupants attempted to escape the burning building. Several people were rescued during the operation, while others were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that 21 people lost their lives as a result of the fire, with many victims reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation and burn injuries. Officials also indicated that several of the deceased were foreign nationals staying at the property.
During the preliminary investigation, authorities identified alleged safety and licensing violations at the guesthouse. Officials stated that the property was reportedly operating more rooms than permitted under its registration and did not possess a valid fire safety clearance certificate at the time of the incident.
