DENVER, Colorado — Authorities are investigating a shooting incident in Denver that prompted an immediate emergency response on Tuesday morning. Local law enforcement confirmed that officers from the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force were dispatched to the 600 block of Santa Fe Drive following tracking reports of a stolen construction vehicle equipped with a GPS locator.
Upon tracking the stolen vehicle to a Sinclair gas station near 6th Avenue, officers confronted a 35-year-old male suspect who had entered the convenience store shortly after 11:00 a.m. Gunfire erupted inside the building during the confrontation, leaving multiple bullet holes shattered across the front glass doors of the establishment. Law enforcement personnel confirmed that an Adams County Sheriff’s deputy and a Colorado State Patrol trooper both discharged their weapons during the incident, as the suspect was believed to be armed.
The suspect sustained injuries from the gunfire and was rushed by emergency medical services to a nearby hospital, where officials report he is currently in stable condition. No law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured during the exchange. Following the shooting, Denver Police Department officials quickly secured the residential and commercial perimeter, initiating a full closure of Santa Fe Drive between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue to preserve the active scene.
Investigators, led by Colorado State Patrol Chief Matthew Packard and local detectives, are actively collecting ballistic evidence, interviewing gas station witnesses, and reviewing available surveillance footage to establish a precise timeline of the escalation. While the motive remains tied to the active auto theft investigation, authorities have urged community members to completely avoid the Santa Fe corridor while the forensic team processes the site. The Denver Police Department emphasized that public safety remains paramount as outside jurisdictions collaborate to resolve the ongoing investigation.
