A quiet evening in Lumberton turned into a heartbreaking crime scene after 27-year-old Alexis Locklear was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a sudden burst of gunfire. The tragic incident occurred last Wednesday night in the 2200 block of Musselwhite Circle, leaving family, friends, and the entire community mourning a life taken far too soon.
According to investigators, Locklear was standing near a vehicle with a group of people when a passing car opened fire. Witnesses say multiple gunshots rang out as the vehicle sped by, sending people scrambling for safety. Tragically, one of the bullets struck Alexis, who collapsed at the scene. Emergency responders were called immediately, but she was pronounced dead before life-saving efforts could make a difference.
Authorities say the shooting does not appear to have specifically targeted Alexis. Instead, she became the victim of a random act of violence, caught in the path of gunfire meant for someone else or fired recklessly into the group. The devastating reality has left loved ones struggling to understand how an ordinary night could end in such sudden tragedy.
By Thursday morning, investigators identified and arrested Travis Hunt Jr., 22, in connection with the case. He was taken into custody and booked at the Robeson County Detention Center, where he is currently being held without bond on a first-degree murder charge.
