ROTC Professor Lt. Col. Brandon Shah Killed in Campus Shooting

The Old Dominion University community is reeling after Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a respected ROTC professor and military science department chair, was fatally shot Thursday morning during a classroom lecture. Shah, a lifelong Virginian and native of Chesapeake, returned to ODU in the summer of 2022 to lead the Army ROTC Monarch Battalion, a program he once attended as a student.

Lt. Col. Shahโ€™s life was defined by service. Enlisting in the Army in 2003 as an aviation operations specialist, he served on active duty, in the Reserves, and with the Virginia Army National Guard. Shah graduated from ODU in 2007 with a sociology degree and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Atlantic Resolve rotation. His military career earned him multiple honors, including two Bronze Stars, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Valor, and numerous commendations, reflecting his bravery and dedication.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger described Shah as a โ€œdevoted ROTC instructorโ€ whose guidance inspired students to follow a life of service. โ€œI am grateful for his example, deeply saddened by his death, and praying for his family,โ€ Spanberger said. Similarly, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans praised the quick thinking and courage of ROTC cadets who subdued the shooter, preventing further tragedy.

The FBI Norfolk office is treating the incident as a potential act of terrorism, emphasizing that every lead will be pursued. Shahโ€™s passing has left a void in the hearts of colleagues, students, and the wider Virginia community, where he was admired not only as a military leader but as a mentor and educator.

Shahโ€™s legacy of courage, leadership, and dedication to others ensures he will be remembered far beyond the classroom. In the wake of this tragedy, students, faculty, and residents are mourning a true hero whose life embodied honor and service.
