A tragic shooting at Old Dominion University has left a campus and community in shock after gunfire erupted inside a classroom where a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) lecture was taking place. The incident occurred around 10:50 a.m. inside Constant Hall, a building that houses classrooms and faculty offices.
Authorities say the suspect, Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, entered the classroom and asked whether the group gathered there was an ROTC class. Moments later, he reportedly opened fire on those inside. Among the victims was a retired U.S. Army officer who had been leading the lecture for students interested in military service.
Witnesses described a scene of panic and chaos as shots rang out in the room. In a remarkable act of courage, several ROTC cadets reportedly confronted the shooter. According to investigators, the cadets were able to tackle and stop the attacker, bringing the violent incident to an end before more lives could be lost.
Tragically, the retired officer died at the scene, while another victim—believed to be a student—succumbed to injuries after being transported to the hospital. A third individual injured during the attack survived and is currently receiving medical care.
Investigators say Jalloh had previously served time in federal prison after being convicted of supporting the extremist group Islamic State. He had reportedly been released in late 2024 after completing his sentence. Authorities are now working to determine how he obtained a firearm and gained access to the campus while under supervised release.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack, including security protocols and the suspect’s activities leading up to the shooting.
The university has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and is providing counseling and support services for students and staff affected by the tragedy.
